R11,6m Mercedes nothing but a useless work of artLos Angeles - The owner of an exotic, 12-cylinder Mercedes has sued its maker for a $1,7-million refund on "the world's most expensive lemon". Mark Johnston bought the Mercedes-Benz AMG CLK-GTR roadster, one of only five produced and the only one in North America, for $1,7-million (about R11,6-million) in 2003. Guinness World Records lists the car as the most expensive production vehicle ever. "The car turned out to be exotic in the worst possible way," said Johnston, a former Ferrari mechanic. "It just doesn't run." The 6,9-litre, 12-cylinder engine can shoot the car from 0 to 200km/h in 9,9 seconds and it has a top speed of 322km/h. . read more. Merc's SLK monsterIt's wide, stocky and low slung. It's the Mercedes-Benz SLK 55 AMG, boasting a V8 mill pumping out almost 300kW. With the output of the AMG 5,5-litre V8 engine enhanced to 294kW and 520Nm, the special SLK 55 also features several lightweight construction components, carbon hardtop, 19-inch AMG forged wheels, AMG height-adjustable sports suspension and AMG high-performance composite brake system. The front of the car features a restyled AMG front apron with large air intakes that supply the additional transmission oil cooler and the high-performance steering oil cooler with fresh air. New side air outlets of black carbon-fibre enhance air-flow through the larger engine oil cooler. The wider front bumpers are made of ultra-light carbon-fibre-reinforced-plastic (CRP) and have black outlined air outlets. read more. CARkeys - DTM Comes To Brands HatchThe weekend of July 1-2 sees one of the world's most exciting saloon car race series come to Brands Hatch race circuit in Kent. Cars competing in the DTM (German Touring Car Championship) look vaguely like their production counterparts, but they use exceptionally advanced chassis and 500bhp V8 engines. Some very big names can be found on the entry lists. Regular competitors this year include Mika Hakkinen, Jean Alesi, Heinz-Harald Frentzen and seven-times Le Mans winner Tom Kristensen. It has even attracted former F1 World Champion Damon Hill, who will test an AMG Mercedes-Benz C-Class at Brands Hatch later this week. The two British drivers taking part in the DTM this year are Jamie Green - currently lying fourth equal in the points table alongside Hakkinen and Frentzen - and Susie Stoddart, only the second female DTM driver to take part in the series after Ellen Lohr competed with great success a few years ago. read more. |
